An update on some excellent progress. The Global Village is growing. Next summer - 2020 we will be doing our biggest and most ambitious summer program. We are holding an entire 3 month Summer of Extreme Design-Build (Summer X). We'll be moving the state of art forward quite a bit as we build some ambitious projects. We will begin 3D printing the types of construction panels that go into the Seed Eco-Home - which is one of latest construction projects. That will be a major step, as we just started producing our 3D printers, and we are scaling them up next year to produce full-sized, 4x8 foot construction panels. After all, we are a construction set - so scalability is our game. And, we will be using waste plastic as the feedstock for making 3D printing filament. Check out some of the schedule in the last link, and more programs coming up next year:

The open source house we built already is amazing, and it would take a relatively short effort to document it just as it is. The truth is that it is actually fully documented, but we find that very few people have the time and energy to parse all the info. In reality, studying all of its principles, designs, and utility systems would probably take someone a year to understand for both the house and greenhouse. The living machines is a complex machine. It is not the final product - nothing is - but it is good enough and a good case study.

So we decided to allocate a window of opportunity of 3 days during the Summer X - for collating all the materials to date, and publishing the results of the as-built structure in a single, printable manual. Right now this material is scattered across websites, Google Docs, the wiki, CAD files, and picture repositories. We are committing to packaging all of this as a sizable PDF. For those who would want to replicate the house exactly as we built it - that will be enough to accomplish that. That satisfies many use cases, as many people continue to ask us how to build one. But the point is - all the info is enough for someone to replicate it - so you don't need to rely on us to do it. It keeps coming back to me that some people could and likely will replicate the build somewhere. Any many more will be inspired by our innovative, open source design, greenhouse, utilities - and everything about its modular construction and design philosophy. That is all precious and combines to a powerful package - so we need to make access easy.

Our commitment is to spend 3 days of dedicated time, with dozens of people who are likely to participate during the Summer of Extreme Design-Build - on focused collating and publishing of all Seed Eco-Home documentation in a digestable format. That is probably like 1000 pages of design and documentation spanning everything from foundation to biodigester to off-grid capable PV to name a few. We'll see what we can do in the 3 dedicated days. The materials and documents are all there - we just need packaging. Just organizing everything and adding an index to it would be a great step forward.

We also invite you - if you would like to collaborate in this massive Book Sprint. We will provide a master-list of known assets (they are actually all liked from the Seed Eco-Home Wiki Page, if you dig into each link) - and we all collaborate, in real-time, on a cloud-editable doc - organizing, writing, formatting, making it pretty. You would have to commit at least 8 hours over the 3 days - to produce a document that is a gift to the world. It's a task that if done by one person, might take a year to do alone. With dozens or hundreds of people working at the same time - the burden is lifted significantly. How is this manageable? By modular breakdown. We can split the work into about 24 sections or chapters, and have a few people work on each. Each person uses collaboratively editable docs, and a master index, so you can see what everyone else is doing. All you need is a good internet connection. We coordinate via video, using live conference, or possibly a Facebook Live session. If you have the time to commit - you're welcome to participate. The only requirements are to write and edit. If we have copywriters, writers, or graphics artists, this could become even more of a gem. And we will take 3 days only - as this could take as long as we let it - so a short time makes us focus on a tight product - as we know we have limited time.

So please email me at marcin@opensourceecology.org if you'd like to sign up for this session - it will take place in the 3rd week of August, near the end of the Summer X. We're inviting both participants from the on-site Summer X program, as well as any people who can join via the internet. The only requirement is a willingness to collaborate on an important product. The more people, the merrier. We know how to do modular task breakdown, so this can be productive for everyone who joins.

There is much more going in - just wanted to fill you in on the next in the construction program. We're continuing strong next year, have ambitious plans, and invite you to join us. You can see other events, workshops, and now products - on the front page of our site - https://www.opensourceecology.org/. Yes, you can now get one of our printers, and next year, you'll be able to get one of our tractors, as we begin production.

We have just launched a new initiative - the Open Building Institute. It builds upon our construction set machines - to make affordable eco-housing accessible to everyone.

The goal is to develop turnkey, affordable, 700 square foot starter homes - loaded with ecological features - that can be built in 5 days for under $25k in materials. We'd like to make this a viable option so that instead of buying a standard home with a mortgage, you can get a smaller home that can be expanded as needed - at 1/10th the cost. This is the Incremental Housing concept, which allows you to get a house for the price of a new car.

Please see our Kickstarter: http://kck.st/293ISTN and support us.

Marcin
tag:www.kickstarter.com,2008-10-09:FreeformPost/7923772014-03-28T13:16:12-04:002014-03-29T18:41:13-04:00MicroHouse Workshop - MicroHouse 2 - April 18, 2014
We are pleased to announce our second MicroHouse Workshop coming up in 3 weeks - where you get a chance to build a Microhouse in under a week - using our natural building compressed earth blocks (CEBs):

This is our next experiment in line - showing the culmination of how our equipment can work together to produce housing with radical efficiency. LifeTrac broke during the 2011-2012 build of HabLab. Now we have fixed the bugs, and aim to show our complete equipment package working seamlessly. The build day is Saturday, September 28, 2013. Any of you who have the Build Naturally Package as your reward - please mark your calendars. The build will be held at Factor e Farm - an hour away from Kansas City. We will have 2 CEB presses and 2 tractors running - and we will be pulverizing soil, pressing bricks, and stacking the bricks right in the walls. We intend to press 5000 bricks on that day.

We look forward to this day as we show extreme efficiencies of brick production and house building. We'd like to see if CEB can be competitive with stick framing in terms of rate of building. We will start with the foundation already laid. We are designing the house in an entirely modular fashion - such that the brick laying, roof sections, utility units, and framing will be done at the same time. We are experimenting to see if we could build this demo microhouse - consisting of two 12'x12' rooms - in a single day. We will have a large crew of at least 24 people working - so we are master-minding a detailed and rigorous build procedure, with careful role allocation, and impeccable ergonomics.

Come to get your hands dirty and to have a fun and rewarding day. Please email me at marcin at opensourceecology dot org to RSVP - if you have the Build Naturally reward to claim. Finally - our machines are in good enough shape that we are confident that we will do this seamlessly.
September is also the month we predict to see the first one-day CEB Press production run. Production Director, Marshall Hilton, will lead a group of 8 as they complete weekly one-day production runs during which the newest revision of the CEB press will be completely fabricated from the ground up. These production runs are one facet of our scaling efforts and are predicted to raise $20k monthly.

As far as building with CEBs on site at Factor E Farm, we are currently planning the construction of a series of MicroHouses:

Thank you for your contributions to a sustainable, healthy, open source future!
